Nerve problems (peripheral neuropathy) has become a common medical condition as BP and diabetes are. Most of the population are having peripheral neuropathy in one or other form.
What is Peripheral neuropathy:
According to Mayoclinic, Peripheral neuropathy is, a result of damage to the nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves), often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in the hands and feet.
Most of these symptoms arises due to deficiency of vitamin B12.
Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency :
B 12 deficiency Can cause variety of symptoms including fatigue, headache, depression, headache, heart palpitation, constipation or diarrhoea, loss of appetite, gas formation also nerve problems like numbness or tingling muscle weakness, vision , yellow or pale skin, mental impairments, pain & inflammation in mouth and tongue.
It can also create mental problems like depression, memory loss and behaviour changes.
Long term deficiency of B 12 can get severe and one may experience gastritis, pernicious anemia, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, bacterial growth and parasites in small intestine, immune disorder etc.
Low levels of vitamin by 12 in pregnant women leads to developmental delay in new born.
How to prevent?
1. Include animal proteins like meat, poultry seafood, dairy products and eggs
2. Fermented foods like idli, khaman, dosa, fresh curd is also good source.
3. B12 fortified grains & other products
4. By 12 injections
5. Or supplements of B 12.
