Obesity is a complex disorder in which body fat has accumulated excessively so that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to increased disease incidence and decreased life expectancy.
Depending on storage of fats in body there are two categories of obesity
Central obesity (men)
Peripheral obesity (women)
In common language they are termed as ‘APPLE’ or ‘PEAR’ shaped obesity and other scientific names are ‘ANDROID’ & ‘GYNOID’ obesity. ‘ANDROID’ obesity is more prevalent in men and ‘GYNOID’ obesity in women.
What is Apple & Pear shape of Obesity
In the central type of obesity also called as Apple shaped obesity, the fat occupies the abdominal region of subjects. In the peripheral type also called as Pear shaped obesity, fat is accumulated around the hip and thigh areas. This means that the hips are almost rounded and the buttocks look larger compared to normal people.
Diseases that arise in body due to obesity
· High blood pressure
· Diabetes
· Glaucoma
· Hyper acidity
· Pain in joints
· Gout
· Breathing difficulty
· Certain cancers
· PCOD
· Infertility
Risk related to central obesity
Central obesity is considered more dangerous than peripheral obesity, and there are many reasons for it. Central obese are more at risk of having disease related to obesity such as type 2 Diabetes, metabolic syndrome and heart disease.
Increased fat cells inside the body increase the resistance from insulin. If obesity keeps on increasing all the foods eaten by obese individual turns to fat and these increased fats gets stored beneath our skin, gets deposited in cells and further more gives fat coating to each cells in our body. When every cells of body gets fat covering, receptors of insulin present on the cells stops working and they do not get message from insulin hormone. Inability to understand the insulin message makes glucose difficult to enter the cells, thus lots of glucose remains in the blood stream. This increased glucose in blood when tested in lab, shows the result of increased glucose in blood and termed as Diabetes.
Central obesity has connection with glucose in blood, increased insulin, increased total cholesterol, and increased level of tri-glycerides and lower levels of High Density Lipo-proteins [HDL].
Elevated triglycerides, glucose and insulin levels are associated with increased insulin resistance, which in turn is related to calorie burning capacity of an individual. Body fat composition may affect thyroid test in the obese, the changes in T3 and T4 (thyroid hormones) could be the consequence of fat distribution.
Conclusion:
Obesity is a serious health condition that requires your prime attention to cure it, if left untreated can cause major series illness, however Peripheral obesity is healthier than Central obesity.
