It is a rare infection from fungus, called mucormycosis or black fungus, is infecting patients of Covid–19[i]. On May 9, 2021 ICMR and union health ministry issued advisory for screening and management of black fungus.

Black fungus is mold which is present in soil, plants and other decayed organic substances (fruits/vegetables). Dr. Akshay Nair, Mumbai based eye surgeon believes that this mold is also present in human nose to some extent.

Black fungus is found on decayed fruits & vegetables
2. Nasal congestion,
3. Facial pain,

5. Pain In eyes,
6. Swelling in cheeks,
7. Chest pain
8. Black crust in nose.
What happens to lungs:
1. Infection pervades in lungs all over causes cell death thereby reddish or black color appearance of lungs.

Complications from fungus:
Affects eyes, nose and brain, if left untreated it can cause surgical removal of eyes, nose; surgical removal of jaw bone to prevent fungus from spreading, and can lead to death.
Who can catch this fungus:

3. Diabetic patients can catch it &
4. Patients of AIDS/HIV.
Mortality rate:
Those who get affected from this fungus can lose their lives if correct treatment is not done as the mortality rate is 54% from this fungus.
Treatment includes:
2. Monitoring sugar level in diabetic patients.
3. Use of steroids to manage immune functions (completely decided by doctors).

4. Keep blood sugar level in control
