 Mushroom belong to the kingdom fungi, it has around 1,00,000 species.

Mushrooms are made of 90 per cent water. A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, which grows above the ground on soil or its food source.

Some mushrooms are umbrella shaped with a central stalk and a cap called pileus. The paddy straw mushrooms and a white button mushrooms are example of this type. 

 

 However the oyster mushroom does not have a central stalk as it arise laterally with a very short stalk.
Unlike other plants, mushrooms are devoid of green pigment chlorophyll and hence have to depend on other living organism or imbibe nutrients from dead organic matter.

Mushrooms are rich source of proteins therefore good for weight gain and it is high in quality protein. On dry weight basis protein content is 20-30 %. Mushroom contains disaccharides of glucose, called trehalose. Carbs account for only 15% of dry weight of mushrooms.

Due to its calorific value, fresh mushrooms 

can form excellent slimming diet. 

As fresh mushroom contains less fat, 

they can be given in less fat diet. 

 

Because it has low carbs, it is good for diabetics. The shiitake mushroom helps in preventing high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, gall stones and numbness of hands and feet.

They are rich with protein, fibre, iron, vitamin B and vitamin C, also has mineral extra folic acid, potassium and copper. Paddy straw mushroom's health benefits include reduced cholesterol in the digestive system.

 Porcini mushrooms can be used to make meat dishes, sauces, broth, eggs, pasta and vegetarian dishes. Similar to other varieties of mushrooms, Porcini has its own set of health benefits. They have nutritional benefits that make for a healthy diet, including fibre for gut health, antioxidants that boost immunity,

The mushroom gets its name due to its similar appearance to the oyster. Oyster mushrooms are mostly fat-free and a good source of essential minerals and vitamins including niacin, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and thiamin. It also has numerous health benefits such as it lowers cholesterol, boosts heart health, better immune function, and improved metabolic health.


Fresh Shiitake mushrooms have a light woodsy flavor and aroma. These have a meaty texture and are chewy, and go well with almost everything. They are popular for their medicinal properties and are found in powdered supplement form in many herbal pharmacies.

 
These mushrooms are impressive because of their size and meaty texture and earthy flavour. Similar to its other varieties, portobello is one of the natural sources of vitamin D

They are available in orange, yellow, golden sometimes in white color and are funnel shaped. They are found in north America and Europe. They resemble the flower Hibiscus.
