What is Yogic Diet & its effect on Body and Mind


Traditional Yoga teaches one to express gratitude before eating food, to eat it slowly with complete awareness and to chew it well. One half of the stomach should be filled with food and of the remaining half, a quarter should be filled with water and the balance quarter should be left empty. Yogic diet do not take calories, proteins, fats etc. in account, the whole concept of yogic diet is to keep disease free body and vibrating mind thus attaining Bliss easily.

Wrong eating habits can lead to imbalance in body which gives rise to diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases etc.

Traditional Yogic diet categorizes food into Satvic diet, Rajasik diet and Tamasik diet. Food that is well cooked, sweetened, lubricated, easy to digest which satisfies one’s hunger and taken after offering it to lord, that food increases purity, sense of truth and light in one’s life are considered as Satvic Food.

Eating food which is bitter, sour, pungent, salty or hot, oily, food obtained after killing creatures of earth, garlic, asafetida, spices are considered Rajasik Food, they are tough to digest and increases aggression in mind. Unwholesome and disproportionate diet thus Keto diet are rajasik diet also Gym diet which stresses you to have only proteins in all meals are under this category.

Tamasik Food are stale foods that is heated over and again is dry, ready to cook processed foods which has too much of salt or sourness, this kind of food troubles one’s intestines and digestive organs as they are tough to digest and assimilate inside the body. This kind of diet increases lethargy and dullness gives negativity to mind and slowly increases diseases in body. Many different names of diet you may have come across like General motor diet, compensation diet etc. are considered Tamasik diet as they will drain your energy and will weaken your Dhatu (tissues) therefore problem of hair, nail and skin arises.

Milk, desi ghee, cream, curd, cereal, and pulses (except black dal), almonds, groundnuts, coconut, all fruits, vegetables (though all fruits and veg are included, this doesn’t mean that you include only fruits and vegetables in all the meals in a day). Diet should be balanced.
Meat, fish, eggs, tea, coffee, cocoa, chilies, tamarind, chutneys, pickles, mustard, spices, hot, bitter, sour, saline and pungent, oil, white sugar, pastries, refined cereals. All foods those are rich in taste.
Beef, pork, all intoxicants, wines, liquors, tobacco, onion, stale, rotten, unclean foods which are half cooked or twice cooked. Makes system weak and sap the energy.
