Spices and herbs are an integral part of human diet,
particularly in the Orient. Besides their use to impart flavor, color, food
preservation and enhance palatability, they have been extensively used for their
health beneficial effects. Fortunately, even long-term consumption of these
substances is not known to produce any side effect.
Herb tea
Mint, rosemary (mehandi), sage (tezpatta) and thyme (ajwain ke phool) are flavorful enough to be used alone in aromatic beverages known as herb tea. Basil (Tulsi) leaves can also be added.
Benefits of herb tea:

- Mint has carotenoids, works as powerful antioxidant
How to prepare:
Add 2 tsp. of fresh leaves or 1 tsp. of dried tea leaves to one cup of boiling water in a teapot or vessel. Add ¼th all your favorite herb in it. Allow it to boil for 5-10 minutes. The color of the tea becomes light green or amber. Herb teas can be sweetened with sugar or honey with lemon but milk or cream is never added.
Ayurvedic tea
Black pepper, ova (ajwain), turmeric, cardamom, cloves, dry ginger (sunth), fenugreek seeds (methi seeds) cinnamon and licorice (mulethi) are few spices and condiments that are added to tea. These are commonly used and easily available at grocery shops however, few other spices can be added.
These are known for their health benefits on body. To get the maximum benefits from these spices you need to use them all in appropriate amount. Anything in excess is harmful for body. So, you can do grouping of these spices and condiments by putting 2-3 of them in one group. Here are few examples:
- Black pepper (4-5) + turmeric ( ¼ pinch )+ cinnamon ( 1tsp.)
- Licorice (1 tsp.)+ fenugreek seeds (6-7 seeds)
- Clove (1-2) + cardamom (1-2) + dry ginger (1/2 -1 tsp)
- Ova (1 tbsp.) + cardamom (1-2)
- You can do permutation and combination of these 9 spices as you wish and according to your taste.
How to prepare:
For maximum benefits use green tea or oolong tea 1 tsp. in a big cup of water, add any of above mentioned combination in given amount. Allow it to boil for 5-10 min when it gets concentrated and reduced to half cup, add 1 tbsp. honey.
Benefits of spices and condiments in general:
- Spices in general stimulate salivation, acid secretion and digestive enzymes.
- Spices are used for digestion and to reduce flatulence.
- Some spices have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant property.
- Some spices help in improving impaired blood glucose levels in the body and help diabetics.
- Some spices reduce cholesterol levels and may be useful in preventing heart disease.
- Very few spices help in cancer treatment.
Benefits of Ayurvedic tea:
- Ova is household remedy for indigestion, can be used for kids too
- Ova relieves chest congestion for small children
- Cinnamon has flavonoids which acts as antioxidants
- Clove has phenolic compound, it also act as antioxidant
- Fenugreek seeds helps to maintain sugar levels, can be given to non-insulin dependent diabetic patient
- Gingerol in ginger act as natural cough suppressant
- Black peppers are used for throat infection, cough and chest congestion
- Piperin present in black pepper helps in preventing cough, cold and infection
- Turmeric relives sore throat and flatulence
Due to arrival of monsoon one should switch to such tea’s and they are much needed for giving us antioxidants to remove free radicles from our body and to give immunity. Today, main focus for each individual is to increase own immunity to fight off corona as much as we can, and in that battle where we are focusing on diet and exercise to increase our immunity, intake of such beverages cannot be avoided.
